What is a Backflow
Backflow takes place when water flows opposite of its intended direction. There are two conditions that can cause backflow: It may occur due to either back-siphonage or backpressure in the water system. Backflow can take place within any water distribution system, public or private.
Backsiphonage
Can happen when the water main or plumbing system fails to maintain pressure. This reduction in pressure will allow the water to flow opposite the normal direction. This difference in pressure can allow non-potable water and other liquids into the potable lines
Backpressure
Can occur in a plumbing system that has a higher pressure than in the water supply line. This can force non-potable water and other liquids into the potable lines.
What are Cross Connections
A cross connection is a connection of a potable water source and a non-potable source. Under a backflow condition, these connections to a non-potable source could possibly contaminate our drinking water. If a backsiphonage or backpressure condition occur, a hazardous backflow condition can result.
A backflow does not always happen in a cross connection environment, but where cross connections exist, there is always the possibility
